Winterton 0 Emley 3
After a second half firework spectacular, Emley come away from North Lincolnshire with all three points this Bonfire Night.
The win extends the Pewits’ unbeaten run to 19 games in all competitions and saw Joe Jagger get his 20th goal this season as well as James Walshaw pick up Man of the Match for his brace.
On a chilly, wet day by the Humber, the first half was gruelling with the defences on top. Playing against the wind, Emley had few chances and it seemed to be that a goal would come eventually for the hosts.
Emley’s best chance of the half came ten minutes in as Jagger broke free of the defence and let his shot fly, but it was high and wide of the post.
Rangers, looking dangerous, pushed forward and earnt themselves a free kick. On target, Lambton was on it to deny Winterton the opening goal.
Winterton counter attacked Emley’s corner in the 21st minute and broke into the penalty area. The first shot, low down, was parried away by Lambton with his feet to a Winterton winger who had another go from point blank. Lambton, dedicating his whol body with arms out, denied the hosts for a second time.
Just moments later, Winterton broke the Emley defensive line and Lambton, again, saves the day to smother the attack. That was to be the last meaningful play of the first half as the defences tightened up.
HT: Winterton 0-0 Emley
Coming out of the break, Emley looked to get on the front foot and change the narrative of the match, away from the usual draw Emley get out of Winterton.
Within 10 minutes, Jagger broke down the left wing and put in a cross to Walshaw on the back post. Walshaw got a head on the cross and placed it on the finger tips of the Winterton keeper, who couldn’t get a hold of the ball as it pinged off the cross bar and crossed the line to break the deadlock for Emley.
A guilt edged chance came to double the lead for Emley as Walshaw broke the defensive line but, rather than shoot, decided to square the ball to Gooden on his right. The square ball was cut out for a corner which was cleanly dispatched by the defence.
After a hard tackle on Walshaw in the opening minutes of the first half, the Winterton #6 earned himself a second yellow card for a cynical challenge on Gooden, who would’ve been clean through, to bring the hosts down to ten men.
The flood gates had opened and Emley had their tails up for a second goal. Jagger teed Walshaw up in the area but Walshaw hit wide of the target.
Moments later, Walshaw broke the defensive line again but, with pressure on the right, finds himself on a tight angle and his shot is collected by the keeper.
After a long spell of Emley pressure, the goal finally came. Jagger laid off Hardaker in the midfield who crossed the ball into Walker on the back post. Walker’s head goes back to find the feet of Walshaw who taps in to double Emley’s lead and earn himself the Man of the Match.
Emley never let up and, just three minutes after the second goal, Gooden was brought down in the box. Jagger stepped up to the penalty spot to put the game to bed in the 80th minute and get his 20th goal of the season.
With ten minutes to go, the game became bogged down. Emley managed the game well with some fantastic defensive displays from Pashley, Paylor and Hardaker.
Winterton’s best chance came from a corner but it was cooly dispatched by the Emley defensive line.
In the dying embers, tempers rose and a bit of shoving resulted from a firm challenge by Knowles on a Winterton midfielder. Knowles was shown yellow for his involvement in the fracas.
So, after an explosive second half for Emley, the game ended with three goals and a clean sheet for the visitors.
We go again on Tuesday night at Frickley before our FA Vase second round tie against Blackpool’s Squires Gate next Saturday.
