Pewits ease into 3rd round of county cup.

Emley are comfortably through to the Sheffield and Hallamshire Senior Cup 3rd round following a 5-0 win over Wombwell Main at the Fantastic Media Welfare Ground.

Emley's team, a mix of experience and youth, like the previous round against Dinnington, had far too much for their opponents from 3 leagues below who also included a youthful looking team.

Although they didn't give in and didn't really threaten Michael Roxburgh in the Emley goals, Wombwell found themselves 4 down within half an hour and so it was damage limitation for them for an hour, and to their credit they put up a spirited effort.

Emley were on the front foot from the off, but Al Keita's shot was saved low down, Emley would create further chances in the next 10 minutes, Barker-White fired a shot across goal and Malumo who beat the keeper initially before seeing his second effort saved before the opening goal came.

A good move down the right and then around the edge of box saw the ball fall to Fermin Sankoh-Fernandez who placed a fine shot beyond the keeper to score on his Emley debut.

At the other end, Main had a free kick some 25 yards out but the ball in floated over everyone and sailed harmlessly wide, from the restart, Emley would double their lead, Mwiya Malumo got on the end of a lovely ball into the area and his deft chip beat the keeper, Malumo then smashed it home to make sure.

It was one way traffic for the rest of the half, with Emley playing some nice, intricate football and Wombwell desperately trying to hang on, Al Keita tested the keeper again with another long range shot from the left that whizzed just wide, Keita was then involved in the move that led to Emley's third goal on 19 minutes.

After eating a couple of defenders on the left, Keita sprayed the ball across the field, the ball went out right, then back left where Metcalfe thumped one from 20 yards, the ball was then deflected into the net by the outstretched boot of Laurence Sorhaindo, who got his second Emley goal in a matter of days.

As a contest, the game was over 20 minutes in, but Emley kept the attacking up, from a 20 yard free kick, Baldwin struck the wall which led to one of many corners for Emley, minutes later, Malumo and Sorhaindo combined, the shot also deflected for a corner and Emley couldn't take their chances.

Sorhaindo was almost on hand to notch another, but Barker-White's ball in just eluded the Number 9. it would be the Emley number 10 however who would bag goal number 4 just on the half hour mark, following another good attacking move, the ball found itself sitting up nicely for James Walshaw to fire home emphatically with 2 or 3 Pewits also available to take the shot.

Sankoh-Fernandez was impressing in midfield for Emley, he had the next chance but the keeper saved his shot this time, Malumo was also thwarted as his shot was parried onto the post and then out for a corner, from the corner, Hardaker tried a curling shot which the keeper let drift just wide.

Sankoh-Fernandez and Barker-White then combined on Emley's right but the shot across goal from the latter was saved, as was a long range effort from Charlie Barks almost on half time, with the game won, Emley made changes at half time.

H/T- Emley 4-0 Wombwell Main

Curtis, Mason and Sennett replaced Sorhaindo, Baldwin and Metcalfe and it was one of the substitutes who made an immediate impact with a stunning 5th and final goal.

With barely 2 minutes gone of the half, the ball was played to Nathan Curtis on a tight angle inside the box but he drilled a stunning shot off the underside of the bar and past keeper Priestley, it was to be the end of the scoring but not of the action.

A few minutes later, a corner won by Sankoh-Fernandez was recycled and Walshaw was just beaten to it by a keepers glove, and Roxburgh at the other end was called into action to gather a rare attempt by the visitors.

Just before the hour, the dependable Ross Hardaker and impressive Sankoh-Fernandez were replaced by Eben Sutton and Jackson Durham as Emley turned to youth for the final quarter, one of the youngsters, Jack Mason was next to try his luck but his shot flew over, and Malumo saw a shot fly wide from an acute angle.

With the youngsters running around, the 2 elder statesmen of the Emley side, Walshaw and Curtis combined for the next two chances, first, Curtis set up Walshaw but the keeper saved his header, from the corner, Walshaw was thwarted again as the keeper parried to his right, a minute later and roles were reversed, Walshaw putting a lovely low ball into Curtis who couldn't keep his acrobatic shot down.

The youth then combined for Emley's next chance, a lovely run and carry by Mason found Sennett who could only fire at the keeper, Mason then had another shot that flew over as Emley looked to wrap things up with another goal, however, Main's defence stood firm for the remainder.

There was one last effort from Emley, given the Man of the Match award and having the captains armband for the second half, it was James Walshaw who almost had the final say but his shot, with the aid of a deflection, cannoned off the crossbar which was then cleared, but it mattered not, Emley's passage was safe and both teams left to warm applause from the good sized crowd in attendance.

It's back to league action at the Weekend as Emley host Carlton Town in the Northern Premier League Division 1 East on Saturday.
