Sam Jerome reflects on his first season

Richard Waterhouse17 May 2014 - 12:51

The Player's Player, Sam Jerome, gives his thoughts on the club.

It has been a stellar season for Sam Jerome and his efforts were rewarded with the Players player of the Season award two weeks ago. The centre back is enjoying his time at the club and is looking forward to another campaign with the Pewits as the team aims for promotion next year.

Jerome has made 45 appearances and has scored five goals – a very good debut season indeed. He was once on the books at Leeds United when he was a junior and although it’s not exactly Elland Road, he is enjoying his time with AFC Emley after what has been a mixed year.

“It has been a really good season and I have really enjoyed my first spell with the club,” Jerome said. “But from the team’s perspective, it has been one of two halves really. In the first half of the season we would play a good game but then follow it up with one or two not so brilliant results… At the end of the day we have done really well on the back end of the season and hopefully we can carry this into next year.”

After helping his side keep 11 clean sheets and playing in over 40 games, Jerome was awarded with the player’s prize but he feels that everyone has been brilliant this year.

“I don’t think anyone has been a particular stand out player because everyone has been playing at such a high level in this last part of the season and this had been mirrored with eight or nine good results.”

He added that he enjoys working with manager, Darren Hepworth, and the managerial team.

“He’s great and he is really passionate but so are the rest of the coaching staff, it’s not just Daz. They've put a lot of belief in us and they put a lot in for Emley.”

For the fans, there has been a lot of thrilling games to watch at the Welfare ground and Jerome was fond of one particular match which took place on a very wet and windy night in January.

“There has been a few decent performances this year but a couple that stick in my mind are the two matches against Shaw Lane. The second game especially as we were 2-0 down by half time but then we went on to win 3-2 against a team who got promoted which just shows what we can do.”

Jerome is already looking forward to next season and he feels that next time around they can push up into the promotion places.

“That’s the plan. We want to keep the squad together and if we do that then I think we could do really well next season. To go up, either first or second, but it would be great to win and get the trophy. The most important thing is to get out of the league.”
