It’s a derby day with a difference on Saturday (3pm) as promoted Emley welcome Huddersfield Town to the Fantastic Media Welfare Ground for a game that will kick off both clubs’ pre-seasons ahead of the upcoming 2024-25 campaigns.
Both clubs endured very different seasons in 2023-24. Emley were promoted to the Northern Premier League (NPL) as champions of the Northern Counties East League (NCEL), it will be the first time NPL football has been played in Emley since 1999. There were also great cup runs for The Pewits who made it to the final of the NCEL league cup, the quarter finals of both the Sheffield and Hallamshire cup, and the FA Vase and an FA Cup run saw them defeat 2 NPL opponents only to lose narrowly at National League North side Alfreton Town.
For Huddersfield a turbulent season ensued as the Terriers were relegated from the Sky Bet Championship to League One for the first time since the 2011-12 campaign. The club went through three managers in a season that truly never really got going.
The Terriers will be looking to bounce back straight away with American businessman Kevin Nagle looking to change the culture in the club to a winning one. Town have a tough opening fixture away against Peterborough United in the regular League One season. The Posh are a former nemesis of Town from yesterday year however Huddersfield will be hoping to get off to a great start and three points on the opening weekend.
Huddersfield have dipped into the market this summer by bringing in Lasse Sorensen from fellow League One side Lincoln City. The Town faithful will be hoping more signings will follow to help harness that new winning mentality.
Emley and Town were previously regular pre-season opponents when Emley were last in the NPL, drawing large crowds to the Welfare Ground. More recently Emley has faced Town's development or youth squads.
However the two club's ownerships bridged by Emley president and Town fan Andy Hobson are making a fantastic effort to rekindle this former pre-season fixture to its past glories. The Terriers first team led by Duff will take on Tracey's Emley in front of a bumper crowd, as Town fans get a taste of non-league football and some maybe for the first time. With new players on both sides. Saturday will be a good opportunity for fans of both clubs to see some of their new players in action for the first time.
Best of luck to both sides on the day and their upcoming season which both club's will again be looking for favourable results on the pitch to complete their objectives.
