Emley head to South Elmsall on Saturday to take on Frickley Athletic in an FA Vase round tie (3pm).
It will be the first meeting between the sides and it will rekindle older Emley fans’ memories of the old club’s rivalry with The Blues late last century, The clubs enjoyed some famous battles at Emley and at Westfield Lane and including a couple of Sheffield and Hallamshire cup finals in the 90’s.
The rivalry was made possible by Frickley’s relegation from the NPL last season, meaning they are playing at their lowest level since the introduction of the Conference/National league, Frickley were early members of the Alliance league, the forerunner to today’s national league when they were admitted in 1981, and have played in the Northern Premier League since 1987.
Emley won’t care about Frickley’s demise though, as they look to make it 16 games unbeaten in all competitions and progress to the 2nd round of the Vase for the 2nd successive season, Frickley manager Wayne Benn however is familiar with and has enjoyed success at this level.
Former Emley academy striker Keelan Grist and ex Pewit trialist Alhassane Keita are among the top scorers for Frickley so Emley will need to keep a close eye on them both.
Emley’s last game was last Friday’s 2-2 draw at nearby Hemsworth which maintained the unbeaten run and also kept the Pewits 2nd in the NCEL Premier Division table, Frickley were 2-1 winners at Golcar last time out, their first win in 5 games.
Ironically, the sides would have been playing this weekend regardless, as the fixtures meant the league game would have played Friday, that game has now been rearranged for 8th November.
