Preview: Cleethorpes Town (A)

Martin Eastwood11 Dec - 10:00

Away record on the line as we head for the east coast again as top two clash.

Emley travel to Lincolnshire on Friday night to face Cleethorpes Town as the top two in the Northern Premier League Division One East clash (7.45pm).

Following Emley's draw and Cleethorpes' inactivity on Saturday, it means Emley have a chance of overtaking the Owls into top spot, Cleethorpes will be looking to do a league double and extend their gap at the top.

The reverse fixture at the Fantastic Media Welfare Ground at the end of October also saw a top two clash, with leaders Emley going down 3-0 to a Cleethorpes side who were excellent on the night, Emley will hope to reverse the result at Myenergi Stadium.

It's certainly the biggest test of our excellent away record in the league, still unbeaten, only 1 goal conceded and 9 straight clean sheets on the road is a fantastic achievement, however, Cleethorpes lost their last league home game to Bishop Auckland so not a forlorn hope for The Pewits.

Cleethorpes' last game saw them thrashed by Ossett , making a resurgence under former Emley man James Walshaw, Emley drew 1-1 with Liversedge in a 'Kirklees derby'.

Cleethorpes Town, nicknamed The Owls, were formed in 1998 as 'Lincolnshire soccer school' becoming Cleethorpes Town in 2008 played in the local Lincs and Humber leagues before joining the NCEL as Lincs league champions, their first and only such title, upon promotion to the NCEL D1 in 2012, they first encountered Emley and finished a creditable fourth and promotion was won the next season as Clee won the NCEL D1.

The Owls would last only 3 more seasons in the NCEL as they won promotion to the NPL after storming the NCEL Premier and became settled in the NPL First Division, missing out on promotion to the Premier Division in the play offs in 2021-22, they play at The Linden club.

Interesting, very interesting (1)- Grimsby Town play in Cleethorpes and Cleethorpes Town play in Grimsby!
Interesting, very interesting (2) There was a previous club called Cleethorpes Town who folded after WWII with the fabulous nickname 'The Donkey Drivers'!

It will be the 7th meeting between the sides going back to 2012 and Emley's second successive away trip the the east coast following the previous away game at Bridlington Town.

Last time out:
Ossett Utd 4-1 Cleethorpes ( Foster), Att- 373, NPL D1 East
Emley 1-1 Liversedge (Parkin), Att- 383, NPL D1 East
