We speak to Emley AFC manager Richard Tracey to reflect on recent results and preview up coming games.

Emley AFC has been navigating a challenging fixture list, with injuries testing the depth of their squad. Despite these hurdles, the team has continued to perform admirably, extending their unbeaten run across various competitions. Here’s a detailed look at their recent matches and insights from manager Richard Tracey.

In their recent away fixture against Bishop Auckland, Emley delivered a convincing 4-0 victory. The match was heavily influenced by an early red card, as Bishop Auckland’s J. Howard was sent off after just 16 minutes for a dangerous challenge. This left the hosts a man down for most of the game, giving Emley the upper hand.

Reflecting on the match, Richard Tracey said: “We were delighted with the win and the performance. Obviously, the sending off early on in the game changed the fixture. The second goal I felt was important because it gave us some breathing space really.”

The standout performer of the game was Amir Berchil, who netted a superb hat trick, scoring in the 2nd, 73rd, and 80th minutes, while Isaac Baldwin added another goal in the 50th minute. Berchil’s display earned high praise from Tracey:

“Amir Berchil took his hat-trick well and had a great game for us. He's on top form right now and playing with confidence.”

Despite the dominant scoreline, Tracey gave credit to the opposition for their resilience: “I have to give credit to Bishop though, although I thought we were the better side and deserved the win. They played really well with ten men and created some chances. They made it as difficult as they could for us to win.”

The win extended Emley’s unbeaten run and solidified their position at the top of the table. Notably, goalkeeper Dec Lambton saved a crucial penalty, preserving a clean sheet in front of a crowd of 363.

Just days after their emphatic win, Emley faced a different challenge away at Pontefract Collieries, in a match that ended 0-0. The midweek fixture saw both teams battling hard, but neither could find the breakthrough in a damp, Derby-like atmosphere.

Manager Richard Tracey noted the physical toll on his squad: “I thought we looked a bit tired on Tuesday and so we weren't at our best. However, we still have a huge injury list and that's putting strain on the squad. I thought we did some good things on Tuesday but also they played well too and it was a Derby type atmosphere.”

Despite Pontefract creating better chances in the first half, Emley came close when Metcalfe's free kick hit the crossbar. However, neither side could claim victory, leaving both with a point. The match was attended by 271 fans, witnessing a fiercely contested but ultimately scoreless game.

Looking ahead, Emley are set to face North Ferriby at home in their next fixture. Richard Tracey is aware of the challenge but remains confident: “We know them quite well having played them previously but I also believe we are both different teams now. We know they are a good footballing side and will want to do certain things against us. However, it's our job to nullify those threats and deal with them. We also need to show the quality we have available to us too.”

Following the North Ferriby game, Emley will face Sherwood Collieries at home, another team that Tracey respects: “Sherwood are a good side, it won't be an easy game for us.”

Injury concerns continue to plague the Emley squad, with several key players still sidelined. Tracey provided an update on the situation: “We still have several players out and we have to just get through this period. Joe Kenny is still waiting for a scan. Meanwhile, Joe Clegg is back doing some straight-line running in training. Adam Clayton has been playing with a knock but I am hopeful we'll get some centre-backs back soon so we can rest him. We are a bit light in the middle of the pitch.”

Despite the injury woes, Tracey ruled out bringing in new players unless absolutely necessary: “We aren't bringing in any more players though unless absolutely necessary because once everyone is fit they won't be playing. It wouldn't be right me messing players around. So we just have to get through these injuries, we have no choice but just to get on with it.”

As Emley prepare for their upcoming matches, their resilience in the face of adversity continues to shine through. With a strong team spirit and players like Amir Berchil in top form, Emley will look to maintain their unbeaten run and push further up the league.
